An extraordinary YouTube find which simply had to be shared with ST readers, this bizarre idea has now become a bit of a phenomenon across China and Japan.

Customers at any ‘Modern Toilet’ restaurant will be greeted with decorative urinals and sink faucets on the walls, toilet seats (with the lids down) as chairs, and all food is served from miniature toilet bowls!

Visiting Taiwan? Loo don't want to miss out on this....

Food that is, including excrement ice cream, toilet bowl hot pot and fried excrement sticks. Lovely.

When guests have finished eating, they are even able to wipe their hands with toilet rolls suspended from the ceiling!

The first restaurant of the now popular chain was opened in Taipei by Wang Tzi-Wei in 2004, and was quickly followed by others all over Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. His inspiration came from a Japanese cartoon, within which the menus for a restaurant were covered with WC images.

In an interview with The Sun Online, Mr Tzi-Wei said: ‘We had a survey before opening up the restaurant and 20 per cent of people want to have a try. I thought combining the two extreme things together may have good results. A toilet and a restaurant, they are extremely opposite places but combined together can become a unique place.’

Well, definitely not bog standard anyway.
