Sheffield #ReclaimTheseStreets event happening this weekend

The vigil will be held at 6pm on Devonshire Green

A Sheffield #ReclaimTheseStreets event will be taking place at 6pm this Saturday on Devonshire Green.

The event has been set up after the disappearance of Sarah Everard sparked uproar on social media yesterday over the lack of safety for women on the streets. The Sheffield vigil is running to demand safety for all women on the streets.

Last week, Sarah Everard went missing whilst walking home from her friend’s house. A police officer has been arrested on suspicion of murder and kidnap after human remains were discovered in woodlands near Ashford, Kent yesterday evening. The remains are still waiting identification.

The Sheffield event is part of a group of #ReclaimTheseStreets events set to take place over the weekend. The original event, set up after the disappearance of Ms Everard, will take place at Clapham Common at 6pm this Saturday. Other cities including Leeds, Liverpool and Cambridge will also be hosting similar events this weekend.

On the poster promoting the upcoming Sheffield event it is described as: “A vigil for everyone who experiences misogynistic and gender-based oppression on our streets.”

Anyone who is joining the vigil on Saturday must wear a mask and abide to social distancing rules.
