Watch: Builders begin to tear down new £65m uni Social Sciences building

It now won’t be ready until 2022

Builders have begun to knock down the new £65m Social Sciences building belonging to the University of Sheffield, following structural problems with the foundations.

The work will come at no extra cost to the uni, but the 15-month delay is a big blow.

Half of the building is set to be knocked down, and materials from the current build will be recycled and reused when the building is reconstructed.

It is built on a former dam and reservoir site and has been designed “with sustainability at its core”. The finish date is now expected to be the summer of 2022.

A university spokesperson told The Star: “BAM, the building contractor responsible for the construction of the new Faculty of Social Sciences Hub building, has begun to partially deconstruct the new Faculty of Social Sciences building.

“This is necessary in order to gain access to make alterations to the new structure of the new building, which BAM will then rebuild. Although this will bring inevitable delays to the construction schedule, there will be no extra cost to the University.

“We are working closely with BAM to make sure the issue is resolved to our satisfaction and disruption to local residents is kept to a minimum during this work.”
