Sheffield named as one of the cities most at risk of a coronavirus second-wave

Health bosses warned that we need to be careful

Sheffield has been named by the government as one of the 20 cities most at risk of a coronavirus second-wave.

Leicester is ranked as the most at risk in the document leaked to The Guardian, with Sheffield coming in at 15th and nearby-city Bradford third.

It comes amid a stark warning from Sheffield health boss Greg Fell that “all conditions for a second-wave are present,” following the re-opening of pubs and restaurants.

He spoke of the danger of people ignoring social distancing with the lockdown relaxing and said: “The next two months are really important. Winter is coming.

“All the conditions needed for a second wave are present. We must reduce and keep the infection rate low before the autumn and winter because the infection isn’t going to disappear.”

The 20 cities are ranked on cases per 100,000 and testing rates. Previously, experts warned that Sheffield could become the UK’s virus hotspot, but statistics were skewed because of Sheffield’s high testing rates.

Mr. Fell went on to outline his plan to reduce the risk of a further outbreak in Sheffield, explaining that opportunities for transmission must be kept low and that people must isolate properly.
