‘I’m so thankful I spoke up’: GeogSoc are running a mental health campaign this month

‘Uni can be lonely and that’s okay’

The University of Sheffield Geography Society (GeogSoc) are running a campaign this month centred on student mental health.

#YouAreSomeonesWorld is inspired by one of the society's chosen charities, Sheffield Mind, and aims to boost the conversation around the issue on campus.

The committee have been especially active on social media, sharing their experiences, advice and thoughts relating to mental health.

Along with the social media posts across all of GeogSoc's profiles, students can get involved by using the #YASW profile picture filter, like and share the posts, and put the messages of the campaign into action.

People can also message the GeogSoc Facebook page if they want to post something about mental health.

GeogSoc's Charity Officer Steph Lake said:

"It’s getting darker and it’s getting colder but it’s important we stay well – physically, emotionally AND mentally! Uni can be tough and lonely and not very instagramable and that’s ok!

"Follow the # and society pages (insta- @sheffunigeogsoc, FB The University of Sheffield Geography Society, Twitter- @SheffGeogSoc) to see some lovely geography faces from all years and all levels of study; along with tips, challenges, Sheffield Mind and SU guidance and useful stats on mental health.

"You Are Someone’s World! You matter!"

The campaign comes at what can be a difficult time for the mental health of students, especially with days getting cold and dark earlier, and with plenty of department deadlines at the tail end of a long semester.

GeogSoc have now supported Sheffield Mind for several years, and describe them as "an amazing charity."

While the #YouAreSomeonesWorld campaign links to geography through its name, the campaign is aimed at all students, as mental health is something that impacts everyone in one way or another.

A post a day is currently being uploaded to the committee social media, and the society want to raise awareness of what mental health issues can involve, and also the support available from Mind, the Students' Union, the NHS, and other sources.

The #YouAreSomeonesWorld campaign is set to continue right through to the end of November. You can get involved through the Sheffield GeogSoc social media outlets, and become part of the mental health conversation on campus.
