Magid Magid is giving a talk at Sheffield Uni next month for GeogSoc

Tickets will be available on Wednesday

Lord Mayor Magid Magid is set to appear at uni on behalf of GeogSoc next month.

The 29-year-old will be speaking to students on the 19th November about his struggles growing up as a refugee in Sheffield and the challenges our society faces today.

Interviewing him will be Geogsoc Tour Secretary Shaun Perryment.

Magid was born in Somalia in 1989, but his family came to the UK as refugees five years later to escape the civil war that was raging around them.

Since then, he has become a Green Party councillor, and this May he became the youngest ever Lord Mayor of Sheffield.

Magid has since used the ceremonial position to champion a number of progressive causes, such as launching the UK Suicide Prevention Charter in September.

The first batch of tickets for the talk sold out this morning in a matter of hours after being made available on pre-release to Geography students.

But not to worry – the remainder of tickets will become available to the rest of the university population on Wednesday at midday here.
