In praise of Leadmill: Magicians, musicians and other upcoming bands

Sheffield’s favourite music venue delivered once again

The Leadmill provided yet another evening of show-stopping entertainment this Friday night, hosting The Magic Gang, who were originally set to play at Plug until August this year.

The gig followed several shows played by the band already over the summer, including live performances at a number of festivals including Reading and Leeds, Truck and Tramlines, where they were allocated a 45-minute slot earlier in July.

Opening with ‘Alright’, the setlist was composed of songs from their self-titled debut album released in March.

The band continued to hook the audience throughout the night, playing popular songs ‘Getting Along’ towards the end of the show and ‘All That I Want Is You’ to finish the evening off.

With the majority of their songs being about girls and relationships though, ‘Jasmine’ and ‘Caroline’ also made the setlist, and therefore get a notable mention.

A Uni Of student told The Sheffield Tab that the band were "great to see live" after having not listened to their music properly before. "The Leadmill is a great venue to see bands like The Magic Gang. I’ll definitely have to start listening to more of their music and come here more."

The four-piece from Brighton were nominated for Best New Artist at the NME Awards in 2018 and were greeted with the same enthusiasm in yesterday’s performance, making it clear The Magic Gang are quickly becoming a favourite for indie-lovers throughout Britain.

Having only formed in 2014, The Magic Gang have shone thus far, and their sold-out performance at The Leadmill fails to prove otherwise.

If you haven’t already, be sure to listen to their stuff. With just over 365,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, they are definitely ones to look out for.

The Leadmill has also hosted some of the biggest names in music today, including The Stone Roses, The Killers, and Arctic Monkeys to name a few.

Known for giving smaller bands the platform they deserve, the intimacy of the venue and atmospheric floor make it the perfect place to see breakthrough acts, an opportunity The Magic Gang successfully took advantage of on Friday night.

So, if you like the thought of cheap gigs or simply just love live music, The Leadmill is the place to be in Sheffield.
