Super Hans at Leadmill was Sheffield’s most outrageous night of 2017

BIG BEATS ARE THE BEST

For over 35 years, Leadmill has been attracting a wide range of the biggest names in music and comedy.

However, few were prepared for the announcement that Peep Show's lovable crack addict and musical genius Super Hans (Matt King) would be coming to the iconic venue. Naturally, tickets flew out. How many chances are you going to get to experience a live Super Hans set?

"Support" came from two deliberately naff children's entertainers. The apex of this glorious set was a woman eating a whole cake on stage, as The Drugs Don't Work played over the speakers.

Joined on stage by a woman behind some DJ decks and a man dressed as Jesus, Hans finally took to the stage at just gone half nine. He started as he meant to go on – dividing his time between DJing, playing guitar and well and truly owning the microphone.

"I am in loco parentis. I am the last remaining contestant on The Apprentice," proclaimed Hans over heavy techno beats. The evening stepped up when he borrowed audience members' phones to take selfies, before pouring Crunchy Nut over the crowd.

Musical selections were a mixed bag but constantly impressive and out there. Indie anthems from Depeche Mode and MGMT were mixed in with Kanye classics, tunes you'd hear in Hope Works at 4am, and a techno edit of Here Comes The Sun.

The tunes got louder, the crowd got rowdier and by the end of the night there were circle pits forming for every single song. When the live music curfew finally ended proceedings, Hans thanked his assembled devotees, all of whose lives had been changed at least slightly by what they just saw.

The obscenely good value of Leadmill regulars' cards means anything post-Hans is a blur. However, flying cereal, limbs all over the shop and most importantly big beats made it a truly outrageous, contagious night.
