Let’s face it, Sheffield is the best city to come to uni in

You get gravy on absolutely everything

So, you've decided to come to university in Sheffield. Some of you may have known from the moment you stepped out of the car that Sheffield was the place for you, but others of you may have needed a bit more convincing.

However, rest assured, Sheffield is by far the best city in the UK to come to university, and here's every reason why:

Sheffield people are really nice

It's practically impossible to speak to someone from Sheffield without them calling you 'love' or 'duck'. In some cities, it's etiquette for everyone to keep their heads down and put their earphones in, but not in this Yorkshire city. Sheffield has more of a town feeling about it, and don't be alarmed if random people say, "Y'alright duck? How's it going?" when you're on your walk into uni.

You get really toned legs walking up the hills

Trust us on this one. You might consider buying a gym membership before you come to uni, but don't underestimate how fit you'll get trekking to uni and back every day. Wait until it gets to the winter as well, and your daily walk to lectures will feel like you're partaking in a Tough Mudder competition.

You can get served your chips by Sean Bean's nephew

It's not every day you can be served chips by a Hollywood superstar's nephew, but in Sheffield you actually can. Sean Bean, best known for roles in Lord of the Rings and Game Of Thrones, has a nephew, Dan, who owns the iconic chip shop, Broomhill Friery.

There is a night out to suit absolutely everyone

No matter what your tastes are, there will definitely be an event somewhere in Sheffield to satisfy your needs. If you like house music, there's The Tuesday Club or Hopeworks, or if you prefer a quieter night, there are two excellent theatres in the City Centre. Keep an eye out for events pages on Facebook, and you'll be sure to find something for you every night of the week.

There is so much to do, you can never be bored

Even though Sheffield is a smaller city than other university cities, it doesn't mean there are less things to do. Be it ice-skating, going to a football match, going shopping or going for a walk in the peaks, there is always something to do.

There's a lot more culture than you might expect

Sheffield is a city filled with theatres, museums, street markets and quirky events. Every year, The Crucible in Sheffield's city centre hosts the Snooker World Championships, as well as having two theatres which host different shows each week, and having fascinating museums in all corners of the city. There's also festivals, such as Tramlines music festival and 'Off The Shelf' which is a literature festival. There are also loads of music gigs which, in neighbouring cities, can be much more expensive. Check out The Leadmill's Facebook page to see which gigs are coming up.

You get gravy served on everything

You'll have so much gravy during your time in Sheffield that you'll start to become addicted to the brown delicious sauce. Sheffield cuisine is mostly about comfort and is a gravy-and-stodge-heavy diet. We're talking pies, chips, sausages, mashed potato and hotpots.

Sheffield loves pubs and real ale

If you love a good, northern pub with a great atmosphere and friendly punters, Sheffield is the place to be. In Sheffield, it's still possible to buy a pint of lager for under £3, and there are two Wetherspoon's pubs opposite each other in the city centre. The uni's own pub, The University Arms, is a CAMRA pub, so head here if you enjoy your real ales.

The friendly rivalry between Uni Of and Hallam

Not every city has a rivalry between universities like there is in Sheffield. Every year, in the week before the Easter holidays, the 'maroon platoon' (Hallam) clashes with the black and gold army (Uni Of) during varsity.

It's the most Instagrammable of all the cities

'Picturesque' may not be the first word that springs to mind when you think of Sheffield, but you'd be wrong. As northern industrial towns go, Sheffield is one of the most beautiful cities. The peak district is perfect for that on fleek Instagram picture, and the city itself is home to beautiful parks and leafy green roads. It's also like a winter wonderland in the snow.

The bus fares are cheap enough for you to explore the entire city on a budget

With a student bus fare priced at just £1, it would be rude not to explore the whole city. It doesn't have to cost a fortune to go on an adventure around Sheffield, but remember to bring your Ucard to qualify for the discounted fares.

The SU is actually a really good night out

Before coming to university, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Students' Union is not going to be great. You might imagine a dingy bar with broken pool tables and a dreadful DJ playing old music in the background. However, in Sheffield, that couldn't be further from the truth. Uni Of's SU is a great night out, with Pop Tarts being held every Saturday night and The Tuesday Club being held most Tuesdays. Hallam's SU has also been revamped this summer with brand new nights being put on for this year.

City Taxis will accept your U card as a form of payment on a night out

We've all been there. After a night out, you look in your purse and see that you haven't got any cash for a taxi. Rather than risk it and walk home alone, you're able to hand over your U-card to the driver, and then pay for your journey the next day at the Students' Union and get your U-card back.

It's the home of Henderson's Relish

Henderson's relish is something that few Sheffield students can live without. Whether you sprinkle it on your cheese on toast, or add into your bolognaise sauce for extra tastiness, it's the condiment you can't live without.

You get the best of both worlds, being in a city, but also able to be in the countryside in 20 minutes

It's easy to feel smothered in a big city and you can sometimes feel like you need to get some fresh air. This is where Sheffield is perfect. In just 20 minutes, you can be in the peak district and beautiful countryside.

We love you, Sheffield.
