I’m sorry, I just don’t get Brian Cox

He’s the smuggest man alive

Brian Cox, also affectionately known as “The Coxmeister” in certain circles, is currently doing a country wide tour, if you didn’t already know. As a result, much of my Facebook feed has been chockablock with various people clicking that they’re “going” or are “interested in” going to see him on his stadium tour, as well as tagging their mates with something along the lines of “OMG we so have to go to this #goals”.

I just don’t get it. I “don’t believe the hype”, as the Arctic Monkey’s might say. What on earth is it about this Mancunian that’s so appealing?

He isn’t ‘cool’ by any stretch of the imagination. He often wears a dull jacket with ill-fitting trousers and a scruffy t-shirt, and we’re somehow supposed to believe he’s “making science trendy“? Come on, Bill Nye is more of a trend-setter than Brian will ever be.

And equally, what even is that hair? As a man, where do you even go that would give you that haircut these days?! A bowl cut with that much gel and grease in it each individual strand is visible when you watch him in HD. It’s also made even more noticeable by the fact that Dara is completely bald, so it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Even his voice is irritating.  That nasally, condescending tone he uses when he’s telling us about the moon and the stars, as if we can’t just look up in the night time and see them there. He talks to people as though they’ve never had a physics lesson in their life. And, according to the physics students I’ve spoken to in Sheffield, he doesn’t even explain things to the audience in the best way.

And don’t go all “but he’s a musician as well” on me. He played the keyboard, in D:Ream, a band that had one hit. And, as you should know by now, if Alexa Chung wouldn’t date them, they’re no good.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s fantastic that he’s enthusiastic about physics and science, and also that he’s making it a tad more accessible to people who are interested, but it just isn’t for me. He’s far too arrogant and caught up in his own smugness.
