Kelham Island named the eighth hippest place in Britain

It even beat Manchester’s Northern Quarter and Bristol

Sheffield’s Kelham Island has been named the eighth hippest hangout area in Britain by Travel Supermarket.

The well known hipster hangout was named as one of the most up and coming areas in the UK thanks to the many independent restaurants and vintage stores there.

The “Hip Hangout Neighbourhood Index” aims to encourage people to visit new places, and tries to pick places unspoiled by consumerism. And it doesn’t just take into account the level of beard grooming and range of craft beers. It actually takes into account everything from coffee shops to vintage hotspots and local culture.

The index also doesn’t include places now overrun with chainstores or being known universally as a “hipster hotspot”, such as London’s Shoreditch.

The hippest place in the UK was named as Ancoats in Manchester, and the hippest place in Europe was Kreuzberg in Berlin.

Kelham Island is only a 20 minute walk from the University of Sheffield campus and is home to Kelham Island Brewery, famed venue “The Chimney House”, as well as Kelham Arcade and the Indie Arcade where you can pick up all manner of vintage knick-knacks.
