Broomhill is one of Sheffield’s worst robbery hotspots

Broomhill had the fourth highest number of robberies in the Sheffield area between 2011 and 2015.

In figures obtained by the Sheffield Star, Broomhill was subject to 138 reported robberies over the four year period.

Despite being the fourth highest figure after the City Centre, Burngreave, and Sharrow & Highfields, the area has still seen a 43.4% drop overall.

Broomhill councillor Brian Webster told The Star the area was targeted by opportunist criminals because of its high student population, and suggested more work should be done with letting agents to try and remove for let signs.

Other popular student areas, Crookesmoor and Ranmoor for example, didn’t even make the list.

Robberies in South Yorkshire have increased 9% overall across the period, although between 2014 and 2015 the rate did dip 5.5%, evidence crime is falling.

Figures revealed some of the more obscure weapon choices used in robberies across the county: egg, crockery and a dog lead to name a few.
