Face it, Sheffield is an infinitely better night out than London

Did someone say £1.50 doubles?

London is undoubtedly an exciting place to be – it’s a hub of multi culture, big business and fashion. But when it comes to a night out, we can sit smugly in our seven hills and take the real pride.

Drinks prices are a big one, so we may as well address it first. Because nothing ruins your shameless quad vod like it costing an arm and a leg. A night out in London is frankly worthy of a second student loan, with double vodkas at an appalling £13 in some clubs, and anything vaguely resembling a cocktail starting at a tenner.

But rest easy, you can keep double vodka and mixers flowing all Friday night at Plug for just £2 a pop. London clubs aren’t just about raking your money in though, oh no. They’re also hell bent on fishing out the ‘elite’ clientele.

£9 was such a bargain

Unlike Sheffield, London clubs actually demand that you look smart. Big name clubs like Boujis, DSTRKT and Funky Buddha are on the ‘Lux Guest List’, which means they adopt a “smart and sexy dress code” (as stated on the Lux website). For girls, that means you must be donned in a “short dress and heels”, while guys are recommended to wear “a fancy suit with smart shoes”. So you know, as well as being incredibly uncomfortable, your night is naturally costing upward of £50 before you’ve even left the door.

On the other hand, the only investment pieces you need in Sheffield are a Primark white shirt and tie, costing around six of your Great British Pounds. And that’s for the whole three years.

And after hours trying to dance in house music in heels, nothing rounds off your night better than being able to get home. Although London has been flirting with the idea of the night tube, the reality is that your night is ending with either a dodgy trip in the night bus or getting a taxi – which you might have already guessed, is extortionately priced (is there a theme running here?). Cabs are expensive enough in London, but after midnight you have the added joy of double fares.

The great thing about Sheffield is that you know where you stand, City Taxis are on speed dial and even if you find yourself alone with no money, you can use you Ucard to get out of a sticky situation, by simply paying the next day under the Safe Taxi scheme.

It’s not that every night out in London is doomed to be pretentious and overpriced – there’s plenty of places other than generic clubs to spend a good night out. But what ultimately gives Sheffield nightlife that ‘Je ne sais quoi’ is the abundance of students, between both Universities we boast a shocking 60,000. So whether you’re committed to Tuesday Club, Corp Wednesdays or Poppy T’s, you know that your night will be a) banging and b) costing around a tenner. Take a bow, Sheffield.
