Stylish lecturer of the week

‘It’s a philosophy’

The second installment of our series features the glorious Dr Garrett Brown, a California born Politics lecturer with a penchant for 1930s fashion.

Garrett is forever turning heads round Elmield corridors with his formal bow-ties, pork pie hats and long coats, putting a delightfully high brow twist on traditional suit wear.

Once described as “arrogant and elitist” on RateMyProfessor.com, we get to the bottom of those misconceptions and talk shorts, santa, and sweat shops.

“I don’t buy mass produced clothes. I’d certainly never buy from a big retailer. I wear a lot of vintage, used clothing – half of what I’ve got on at any given time is from a charity shop. You wouldn’t know because it’s how you put it together that counts” he said.

“I’m not supporting some awful sweatshop in Indonesia or China. If I do buy new clothes, which I do 50% of the time, they’re from small or local designers. That’s my philosophy.

“I think I miss the time when people cared about their appearance. When people made an effort to present themselves as best they could. To look elegant. And it wasn’t a class thing.

“Now people spend money trying to look like they haven’t made an effort, like shabby chic, and that’s now very ordinary, and why be ordinary?

“One student said they thought I was arrogant and elitist, but I think they misunderstood the vibe. I may dress a bit eccentric and classic, but I’m not elitist or arrogant. I’m approachable and down to earth. When I read that I thought, don’t take everything so seriously, life’s fun…. You shit! Maybe leave that last bit out.

“I do have a more relaxed Californian wardrobe though, which is lighter and less woolly. I wear shorts, orange sherbet shorts with matching socks and desert boots.

In Barcelona

“I don’t have a Christmas jumper but i do have a bowtie, vest and jacket. I used to wear a Santa suit for my little nephews, but I stopped that about two years ago because one of my Aunt’s dogs freaked out and attacked me.

“The dog was right too, I think Santa’s a little creepy to be honest.”
