Uni abolishes all library fines

Boffins at the IC have decided to eliminate all library fines.


The uni announced this week that library fines are now to be a thing of the past.

University will now keep books renewed, saving you the hassle of tackling Conduit Hill and the IC roundabout in an attempt to save the encroaching threat of library fines.

This a is a dramatic turn of events, after last year it was reported that the University library was slammed by the Office of Fair Trading after fines threatened to stop students from graduating.

Students now only have to return books when someone else wants them.

There’s also an opportunity for students to send in what they think about this in an open online questionnaire, although we can’t imagine there’s going to be many complaints.

University Libraries spokesperson Alison told us- “We believe that placing a freeze on borrowing instead of imposing fines provides immediate incentive to return if further borrowing is required. 

It’s also fair to all customers, irrespective of their ability to pay.

We’re not unique in trying out this approach, but it does remain uncommon in University Libraries at the moment.”
