Sheffield’s clubs: How to fit in seamlessly

All you need to know about club dress codes

So it’s Freshers’ Week. That crazy time of meeting new people, shit orientation activities and a fair few nights out.

You’ve made it to Steel City (well done you), left your parents beside Endcliffe Lake and you’re now ready to explore your new clubbing wonderland.

The golden rule of Sheffield is casual. There’s no need to be pulling out your six-inch stripper heels and hair rollers. This isn’t Liverpool.

In Sheffield you’re more likely to see shorts, crop tops, jeans, trainers and t-shirts.

Pop Tarts

The supposed “Best Student Club night in the country” is filled with cheesy pop music and everyone having “lols”.

In Pop Tarts anything goes when it comes to clothes.

It’s a Saturday night so people may fancy dressing up slightly more than the weeknights.

Dresses and skirts for girls in bold colours, and maybe even a plaid shirt for guys.

The Tuesday Club

Internationally renowned and popular with both Uni of and Hallam students the Tuesday Club brings the best in new electronic dance music to Sheffield every week.

Think wavey: crazy patterns, Levi shorts, black on black on black, new balance trainers. Generally speaking, anything you’d pull out of a sale basket in Cow Vintage.

Roar

The union’s regular Wednesday sports night –full of fancy dress, black and gold lycra and naked torsos.

It’s a strong look, one that’s never complete without a blue VK crotch stain and obligatory Roar tiger photo.

DQ

DQ Mondays are almost always a sell out, and it provides a fail safe night full of hip hop, RnB and pop; like a cooler version of Plug.

Go as jazzy as you can muster; think sequins and frayed hems teamed with vintage Adidas.

Corp

Cheap, dirty and messy. Wednesday night School Disco is mandatory white shirt and tie, and some heavy-duty “Corp Shoes” that are fit to take the brunt of the floor; a repellent combination of quad vods, sick, and urine.

Ivory shirts in Corp? Cardinal sin – you won’t even get past the door.

The dress code is stricter than high school itself, and Corp uniform police Gina will stop at nothing to make sure it is not only respected, but enforced.

Plug

Plug hosts the regular Tuesday and Thursday nights, expect mainstream dance and pop and the same playlist week in week out for your entire 3 years at uni.

Plug is definitely dressier than DQ or Corp. You’ll spot more dresses, playsuits, blue shirts, heels and clutch bags, but also a fair few casual types in shorts and trainers. Anything goes.

Carver Street

An area of Sheffield unknown to many; some may call it a classier parallel universe.

Girls wont go far wrong in bodycon bandage dresses, sky scraper heels and 19 layers of make up.

Boys on the other hand are more of a sight to behold. Think the Gaz Geordie Shore complex; tight v-neck vests, oiled up biceps and plenty of steroids.
