Instagramming Sheffield

Sometimes, Sheffield needs a helping hand to look as picturesque as it deserves to be. Luckily, there are Instagram filters for just this purpose. Instagram can make just about anything look good, from your substandard lunch to the bits of Sheffield you only see when you have to visit the Post Office warehouse because you weren’t in when your package was delivered. #CheckItOut

“Left behind.”

An emotional scene, made only slightly less heartwrenching by the addition of an orangey hue that gives the impression it happened a long time ago, so everyone’s probably over it by now.

“Futility on Wood Street.”

Truly inspirational, but is anyone listening? Dampening the colours and adding a gentle blur really draws out the beauty of writing something on a wall.

“Edgy Cylinders.”

Brananan makes even the roundest of concrete structures edgy, whilst bringing out those depressing greys and mossy greens that make the Geography building such a wonder to behold.

“Daylight robbery.”

An unfortunate vista, but not to worry. If you tone down that harsh light and add some dark bits to the corner, it could pass as a Christmas card.

“Regret by the roadside.”

What happened? No one can remember, but it definitely wasn’t a good thing. Add a healthy shine to that fly tipping, so we can all pretend it’s sunny, at least.

“The Mason is dead.”

Taking all the colour out of that decaying brickwork gives the Masons Arms a new lease of life, turning it into a cosy spot your nan might visit for a sherry about half seven at night.

“Community spirit.”

Community is ever more important in these desperate times of austerity. You’ll get by with a little help from your friends, and a handy sepia filter to make that fading lettering look like it’s meant to be like that.

“A Broomhall bed and breakfast.”

The powers of Instagram know no bounds, it can even make Carling appear appetising. A blur, a frame and some extra light and this could be featured in the Sheffield Uni prospectus. Maybe.
