Students have chance to rename Opal 2

And you have until Friday to sumit your entries! But what will you rename Opal 2 to?

The University of Sheffield has announced a competition to rename student accommodation Opal 2.

Students have been given the chance to choose the new name of the city accomodation, known for it’s gated loneliness and the man who stands opposite in a vest and pants and shouts nonsense at students.

There have already been some notable entries.

One student has suggested “Vauxhall 2”. Geddit? Because abroad Vauxhall isn’t Vauxhall it’s Opel? Isn’t he being clever?! Oh just forget it.

Another claimed it was “definitely a good idea” to rename Opal “Yike”, which is incidentally what most students mutter under their breath when they realise that they have to live there for an entire two semesters.

What will they rename Opal to?

The “firm favourite by quite a lot” with mentors down at Opal is “University City Accommodation”, which is about as interesting as the Opal buildings look, as well as being what everyone calls it anyway.

A final suggestion is “Open Village”, an entirely inappropriate name for a gated community requiring no fewer than three separate key swipes to get to your room, one of which opens a gate that wouldn’t be out of place at fort Knox and opens with all the haste of a sloth on its way to a 9am seminar it hasn’t prepared for.

Students have until Friday (21st) to suggest names by email by sending them to [email protected] or by posting on the wall of the University of Sheffield Accommodation page.
