DODGY DEALINGS: Uni of student arrested for dealing ecstacy

A final year student has been sent down for dealing class A drugs

| UPDATED

A uni of student has been jailed for three years after being found guilty of dealing class A and B drugs.

Police raided the student’s flat where they found thousands of pounds worth of drugs and paraphernalia.

Michael Thompson, 22, was in his final year of studying History at the University of Sheffield, but was arrested last term after UK Border Agency officials intercepted a package addressed to him from Holland and found it contained £600 worth of ecstasy tablets.

Thompson was sentenced to three years this week.

The student was just a week away from finishing his final exams and beginning a career in education when he was arrested last May.

Police raided the student’s flat in Upperthorpe, close to the City campus’ Broad Lane Court, and seized over £1400 worth of assorted drugs, scales and pill filler kits.

Police found pill filler kits in the student flat.

Police found 46 bags of ecstasy tablets, resin and weed totalling at over £800. Thompson was also in possession of small quantities of ketamine, vallium and LSD, and texts on his mobile phone showed evidence of drug-dealing. Thompson admitted to dealing to around 50 friends. If you’re a friend of Thompson, the Tab recommends not answering your phone for a while.

“It’s a lawful shame”: Thompson was tried at Sheffield Crown Court

Thompson wept as his family watched over court proceedings at Sheffield Crown Court. The defence lawyer said ‘His life has been devastated through his involvement in drugs, it has destroyed his future.

‘He had a promising career open to him as a teacher having obtained a 2.1 degree.’

Close friend Amil Boury told the court that in the nine months between the arrest and sentencing, Thompson took great efforts to rehabilitate himself, voluntarily attending weekly drugs counselling. Another close friend who asked to remain anonymous said ‘he’s a really nice guy who does a lot for the music and art scene. He does a lot for the community.’

Michael Thompson, originally from Manchester, was heavily involved in the sheffield music scene during his time at Uni. Working with events team Artificial Constructs, he also performs bass with a number of sheffield bands and volunteers his services as a guitar tutor.
