Uni of Sheffield have retained the Winter Varsity trophy after a convincing 3-1 win over Hallam in Alpe d’Huez last week.

‘Uni Of’ claimed victories in snowboard freestyle and both ski and snowboard racing in the competition on 8th January. Hallam won their point in the ski freestyle event.

The competition was the first of its kind to be staged on real snow in combination with the uni ski and snowboard trip after the Sheffield Ski Village was burnt down in 2012.

In a statement sports officer Emily Dibble said, ” The whole week had an incredible atmosphere and this was made even better by a 3-1 win for the University of Sheffield, winning us the first ever Ashes to Alps trophy and ensuring we retain the Winter varsity trophy.”

The trip was organised by the three snowsport clubs SheffSki, SUSC and SHUSnow.

Sheffski captain Jonathan Field told The Tab: “To win the first Ashes to Alps Winter Varsity was incredible! It was a hugely successful event and the atmosphere was unbelievable with a 400 strong crowd supporting the two unis. I hope this will be the first of many victories and the Ashes to Alps legacy will continue for many years to come!”

Committee member Helena Sykes added: “We’re so happy with the way the day went and would like to thank everyone who took part and came along donning black and gold. Not that there was ever any doubt that we’d beat Hallam (again), but the atmosphere when our victory was announced at the après bar was incredible!”
