Where’s best to live: Broomhill

You probably walked through it in first year. Ed Pearce tells you why it’s worth sticking in Broomhill.

Most of us walked through it every day in our first year but what’s Broomhill like as a place to rent a house?

Firstly, it’s a little pricey. Paying upwards of £80 per week excluding bills is not uncommon but it’s a 10-minute walk from the SU, 2 from Tesco, 5 from Goodwin and 7 from Weston Park (which happens to make a lovely picnic spot in the summer). So the location is great … as long as you’re willing to pay a little more.

In terms of food shopping, Tesco and Sainsbury’s joined Spar last year meaning that there are loads of options. Though I’d add that, for fruit and veg, Spar does offer the best choice.

One of the few certainties in life: Select & Save will be open

Nicky’s on Whitham Road is the perfect lunch spot for those who are too lazy to cook, offering generously-filled and reasonably-priced rolls. And, for dinner, the Nottingham House serves up some of the best pies in Sheffield!

You can’t complain about the drinks prices on a Wednesday night at The Place, with pints starting at just £1. And, for pre-drinks, you can buy 2 bottles of ‘wine’ from Select & Save for the student-friendly price of £5.29.

You do get what you pay for, however, with one Broomhill resident saying ‘It tastes like a cross between paint stripper and cat piss. But I still drink it’. Take that as you will.

Prices almost as good as their wit

Following a night out, Broomhill has a variety of eateries open late to satisfy any munchies you may have. There is of course the famous Broomhill Friery, a student favourite, which offers a great selection of kebabs, burgers and chicken.

But, if you’re not in the mood for Dan Bean, I find Balti King to be a delightful alternative for a sit-down meal. And, if you catch Tony on a good night, you may have a cracking deal korma-ing your way: a poppadum, naan, rice, main and even a pint (if you need it) for £10. Naantastic.

Like any good buttie, it’s better on the inside

On the whole, Broomhill is convenient and relatively pleasant place to live and, unlike Crookes, there’s no Conduit Road. Which is brhillyant.
