Students film GBBO spin-off for Cancer Research fundraiser

They even got Martha from GBBO’s 5th series to judge it

A team of students have filmed their very own charity spin off from The Great British Bake Off, ‘The Great Bears Bake Off’ to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Third year Susie Troup is one of the organisers: “We’ve put together an episode of the GBBO to raise money for Cancer Research UK, as the netball club lost their coach to cancer last year and know that many others are affected by this awful disease. So it’s a baking battle.”

The 20 minute-long episode features duos from five Bears teams: Hockey, Netball, Women’s Football, Swimming and Tennis. They were judged by Sports Sab Alex Reilly and GBBO’s very own Martha Collison who commented, “I really enjoyed being the judge for once, and though it was a little different from the real thing I was genuinely impressed with the Showstopper pieces at the end!”

Challenges included blindfolded cookie decorating and masterfully creating the Founders building out of pastry. Most contestants had little experience but rose to the challenge with vigour and a competitive spirit. One team member was enthusiastic despite having apparently cooked a pizza for 8 hours after an SU night. He didn’t hold much promise.

The team are launching the event and announcing the winner at Medicine this Saturday night. It’ll be an evening of delicious cakes and GBBO themed drinks, so get down there and support the Bears!

The film is funny and creative, and definitely worth sitting down to watch with a cup of tea. Vote for your winner and donate anything you can to their JustGiving page. It’s a worthwhile cause to sacrifice some VK money for.
