Oxford employees are the highest paid uni staff in the UK

Cambridge came fourth

More people are paid over £100,000 a year at Oxford than any other university.

Research undertaken by the Taxpayers Alliance found there are 622 employees of the University of Oxford who earn more than £100,000 per year.

This is compared to only 378 at Cambridge.

278 of those 622 employees earn more than David Cameron (£142,000).

An unnamed Oxford tutor was also found to have the largest renumeration package in the whole of the South West – £690,199.

Central government funding of teaching in higher education has declined in recent years with more and more of the cost of tuition being met by students.

After the maximum cost of student loans tripled to £9,000, the proportion of the cost of tuition covered by the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s teaching grant fell from 59 per cent in 2009-10 to 34 per cent in 2013-14.

The overall funding per student fell by 8.9 per cent over the same period.

Despite the reductions in funding per student, salaries in many higher education institutions – and especially at Oxford – are amongst the highest in the public sector.

This begs the question: are we getting value for our money, or are financial rewards flowing to the top academics regardless of performance?
