Confederate flags removed from St Giles’ Fair

Good

A clueless stall prominently featuring confederate flags at the St Giles’ Fair has now taken them down after pressure from the Council and an Oxford third year DPhil.

The game no longer features controversial flags

“The Shooting Gallery” game featured target shooting with toy guns and an American flag alongside two confederate flags.

Yesterday, Oxford Council stated “no action would be taken.” When asked about why the flags were being flown when they are deeply offensive to many, the stall manager replied, “We’ve never had any complaints before.”

Today, however, the confederate flags have been removed. When asked about their absence, the stall manager replied “the council came around to warn us,” and added, “But we only did it because you carried on so much.” Here he was referring to me, as I was the one to raise objection with both the fair and the Council.

He refused both further comment and my thanks. I was so relieved at the outcome that I was almost inspired to pick up a toy gun and play a round. Almost.
