Oxford University resisted calls for the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah to be stripped of his honorary degree following his approval of new misogynistic and homophobic laws.

Brunei’s new penal code sees women flogged for adultery and urges death by stoning for those caught engaging in same sex acts.

The Sultan cares not for OUSU

The new laws have been strongly opposed globally, with celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and Stephen Fry urging a boycott of the Sultan’s hotels.

An emergency OUSU motion condemning the Sultan and calling for him to be stripped of his degree passed unanimously.

However the university has joined Kings College London and Aberdeen University in refusing to rescind the despot’s degree.

OUSU LGBTQ Officer and proposer of the motion Daniel Templeton slammed the university in PinkNews, telling them “[I think] the decision of the University is regrettable and shows a lack of regard for LGBTQ students.”

This is not the first time the university’s relations with the billionaire ruler of the small, oil-rich country have caused outrage. In 2000 the university’s Centre for Islamic Studies was found to have twisted entry requirements when it accepted on his sons for “one-off” two term private tuition, despite admitting he was unfit for a normal undergraduate degree
