No Confidence! Motion against President Sullivan to be brought in next week’s debate
Motion of No Confidence backed by over 30 members was delivered to the Oxford Union this morning
A motion of no confidence in the ability of Ben Sullivan to preside as President over the Oxford Union has been brought by over 30 members of the Union.
The notice, pictured below, was posted on the Union’s noticeboard this morning.
In recent weeks Sullivan has come under fire:
- Three members of Standing Committee resigned including the Librarian and Treasurer ,citing a “toxic environment” stating “To serve under this President has been the biggest regret of my time [in the Union].”
- He has been condemned by election officials for breaking Union rules,
- He was caught out by The Tab for lying and bargaining with the press, as well as trying to spend members’ money covering up his lies.
This will be the first time that anyone will have been able to cast any votes for Sullivan in over a year, as his last contested election was in Michaelmas 2012, where he was elected to Standing Committee with 169 votes. He was then subsequently elected unopposed to Librarian, before becoming President in yet another uncontested election in Michaelmas this year.
Within the Union rules, a motion of no confidence does not have the power to force a resignation, although if Sullivan loses the vote in the chamber, he will be the first ever President to lose such a vote.
