OUSU bans visiting students

Bungling OUSU sinks to new undemocratic low

The already shambolic OUSU elections were thrown into further disarray yesterday when a candidate for International Students’ officer was asked to withdraw once voting was already underway.

Lauren McKarus, a visiting student from Sarah Lawrence College USA who is running as an independent,  faces a meeting of the Junior Tribunal to decide her fate.

The chaotic situation arises as she is the first ever visiting student to run for OUSU office, despite over 450 visiting students studying at the university each year.

It turns out that barmy OUSU rules prevent visiting students from even being allowed to vote, as McKarus discovered when she asked OUSU why she hadn’t been sent a voter code.

It was only then that the bungling OUSU returning officer Nick Cooper realised that McKarus was a visiting student and ineligible to run, this in spite of the fact that it’s plastered all over her manifesto which had passed his scrutiny.

But the plucky yank has so far remained unbowed by pressure and refused to withdraw, appealing and vowing to double down “in fighting for the fair and equal representation of ALL Oxford students”, pledging that she “will continue to do so… especially now more than ever”.

Speaking to the OxStu she complained: “To declare hundreds of students of this fine and upstanding university second class citizens – mere chattel of their proctors is a slap in the face to democracy and freedom loving men and women throughout this great Island nation.”

OUSU by the looks of things…

This shameful attack on the right to vote by fiasco embroiled OUSU  just shows how rotten and removed from the students OUSU has become. Only one man can change this.

To vote you need to follow this link and be armed with your unique voter code.  This was sent to your Nexus on the 16th of November.
