We find out about Worcester’s 300th Birthday plans

Worcester’s is one of the original three Commemoration Balls, which founded the ball tradition at Oxford and it’s their 300th Birthday to boot.

So the night of Friday 27th June 2014 is definitely going to be a big one.

Thus far they’ve kept things very much under wraps but it can now be revealed that the ball is officially in collaboration with Ministry of Sound.

We met up with Andy Thomas (president) and Oli Davies (music) to get the down low on the most hotly anticipated event of the year.

The Tab: Hi guys. Give us an overview of what we can expect from the Ball.

Andy: We’re being pretty secretive at the moment which I think is a good thing. It is going to be white tie preferred with a loose theme. It’s also going to be open to the entire student body which we’ve worked very hard with the college to achieve.

(We asked about theme, food, drink, entertainment…a lot of things seem to be “TBA”)

What is so exciting about the collaboration with Ministry of Sound?

Oli: They’re just an amazing brand with access to many, many DJs, some of which will be making an appearance (again TBA).

Ministry of Sound know how to party

What do you think is that big song that’s going to get everyone going?

O: One More Time by Daft Punk.

What other entertainment will be on offer?

O: Well electronic dance music is always to be expected and we’ve got that area nailed with Ministry of Sound.

But we’re also going to feature loads of other genres e.g. classical, jazz, funk, reggae, so there’ll be something for everyone and the quality of the acts will be high – no cheap local alternatives!

A: It’s really important to get a good range because of all the alumni expected as well as the students. We have the “Mrs Thomas rule” (aka Andy’s mum), so we just ask: would Mrs Thomas enjoy this?

Sadly these guys won’t be making the cut

The ticket is very expensive, do you think one night of revelry is worth that amount?

A: Well you’re going to get more than twice what a £90 ticket can give you. It will just be a step-up. You’re only 300 once.

If you could buy Worcester a present for its 300th Birthday, what would you get it?

O: Maybe more ducks, more water fowl in general…hey how about a Flamingo!

What will you do with ball crashers?

A:  There will be lots of security, so don’t even think about trying to swim the lake.

O: Keep them locked up and then make them do the clean-up the next morning.

General tickets sale opens on Saturday 23rd November. Don’t miss out because from what we could gather, it’s going to be pretty spectacular.
