Thatcher to be Honoured by University

Part of Business School named after UK’s first female PM

An extension of the Said Business School is to be renamed after the late Baroness Thatcher following a request from founder and long time Maggie fan Wafic Said.

The billionaire business tycoon, who has donated over £70 million to Oxford, wants the new building renamed the Thatcher Business Education Centre.

Celebration in the Gladstone Link

The move is likely to prove controversial. While the ex-OUCA president and three time general election winner studied at Oxford, dons famously refused to present Margret Thatcher with an honoury degree in 1985 after protests about cuts.

Outrage in the Gladstone Link

This time round dons were not consulted on the proposals. Despite this the University has approved the renaming, news that will surely bring to cheers from fans of the Somerville chemist, and rage to critics of the inventor of Mr Whippy style ice creams.

The news was not enough for some

The building, which won a 2013 RIBA prize, was officially opened by Prince Charles earlier this year.

This is the latest move from Oxford honouring the late Baroness, after Somerville had earlier established a Margret Thatcher scholarship.

However there seems to be little chance for Boris Johnson’s proposal for a college to be renamed in honour of the Britain’s first female Prime Minister
