What to do on an Oxford evening…

…that isn’t clubbing.

What is there to do in Oxford now the dark nights are setting in?

If the pull of Park End isn’t enough to entice you and Camera isn’t quite your cup of tea, here’s an alternative guide to evening entertainment.

The Imps @ The Wheatsheaf

Funny business at The Imps

A comedy improv group who perform on Mondays at the Wheatsheaf pub (off the High St).

Cleverly done and generally quite funny. For their website click here.

Cocktails

A world away from Sainsburys basics

Booze doesn’t have to be budget. If you’re in the mood for something a little more sophisticated, Oxford offers a number of alternatives:

–          House  has half price cocktails if you’re a member of the Union (as does the Duke of Cambridge).

–          Raoul’s in Jericho is off the beaten track.

–          The Mad Hatter in Cowley has a quirky Alice in Wonderland theme.

Cinema

Jericho’s artsier alternative to the Odeon off George St is the Phoenix Picturehouse has regular showings of more alternative films but also offers the occasional late night movie, which is usually a classic: last term saw Pulp Fiction.

Check out the termcard of the Magdalen Film Society too.

Concert at the O2

The concert venue in Cowley plays host to some decent acts. Kids in Glass Houses and Johnny Flynn both feature later this month as well as Blue and Hadouken!

The weekly pilgrimage to the ‘Switch’ nights on a Friday will bring you Karma Kid and DJ EZ as well this term.

To find out what else is on this term click here.

The Big Society

This could be you

Deemed to be the cool new hang out and located on the ever cool Cowley road, this place offers a twist on your standard Oxford pub or bar.

They do quizzes, ping pong and live music and for some reason serve lots of American style fast food.

For their website click here.

Late Nights at the Ashmolean

On the last Friday of every month the Ashmolean opens its doors from 7.30-10.30 for late-night exhibition perusal. The themed nights include food, talks and music.

For more info click here.

College Bar Crawl

One college bar too many…

Or just keep it simple and see how many of the 38 college’s signature cocktails you can sample.

St Catz, St Peter’s and Balliol (on a Tuesday) are your best bets.

Good luck.
