The Best of Jailbreak

Oxford teams put one up the Argies… all in the name of charity

The Oxford Jailbreak raised a whopping £15,000 for Rag charities, with teams managing to reach as far afield as South America and eastern Europe.

Students had 36 hours to get as far away from Oxford as possible, and then back again, without spending any of their own money. Teams dressed up for last weekend’s event, with themes ranging from Lord of the Rings to jailbird chic:

There and back again (in 36 hours)…

W’onesie’ful costumes all round

Argentina was the furthest destination reached in 36 hours, and the team that managed to travel the furthest and return to Oxford within the time limit made it to Geneva. Other teams ended up in Croatia, Paris, Grand Canaria and Edinburgh.

However, it seems that some teams did encounter trouble on their journeys. The Raise2Give event page states: ‘We’ve had reports of people being escorted out of Heathrow airport by police. We’ve been asked to notify you that entering UK airport terminals without a valid ticket is illegal, and advise you to avoid airports.’

Another team ended up paying for their flights home and, after experiencing rudeness from the staff of a certain airline, were advised to make a complaint to the CEO of the company in question to request that the flight money be donated to charity.

The team that raised the most money, The Fellowship, have received donations totalling over £975. The total amount raised by the event so far is £15,827.72.

Half of the money raised will go to Oxfam and the remaining 50% will be divided between Crisis Skylight Foundation, Jacari, Helen & Douglas House and The Against Malaria Foundation.

There was plenty of ‘tweeting’ from the jailbirds

Hopefully they have returned with some colourful tales…

To Isengard?

If you want to donate to the teams, you can do so on the event page.

Livi Wilkinson tells The Tab about her jailbreak:

Experiencing boardom whilst waiting for a lift.

I jailbroke with a friend this weekend. We got to Edinburgh and back in 36 hours, thanks to the kindness of various strangers, including a Swedish asset manager and a stag party. We quickly realised there was little point having a plan, so we accepted lifts from anybody who was willing to take us anywhere.

Through this we found ourselves stranded twice in rural Oxfordshire, but it also meant meeting some interesting, lovely people.

The fear in the eyes of many passers-by when they heard we were hitch-hikers was both amusing and depressing, and we probably could have done without the barely coherent lecture we received from one man against Oxfam, but we had a great time and travelled 370 miles from Oxford and back without spending a penny.
