Aung San boozed in the Bod

Burmese freedom fighter admits she went on the lash in the library

Suu Kyi bagged an honorary doctorate from Oxford last year

She’s known for her struggle to bring democracy to Burma, captured in 2011 blockbuster The Lady.

But St Hughs graduate Aung San Suu Kyi once flirted with hard-drinking hedonism while at Oxford.

Speaking on Desert Island Discs, Suu Kyi revealed she necked booze in the Bod’s loos with former St Anne’s tutor Anne Pasternak Slater.

She said: “I just wanted to see what it was like. I didn’t think it was very nice.”

Reports she later headed to Bridge are unconfirmed.

And the Burmese beauty told presenter Kirsty Young her looks attracted attention in college. She said: “I suppose I turned a few heads. It was difficult not to be aware of that. I don’t know whether I enjoyed it as such.”

The 67-year-old studied PPE at St Hugh’s between 1966 and 1969, and last summer the university awarded her an honorary doctorate.

St Hugh’s showed its support in 2006 by using a Burmese theme for its ball.
