Owen Donovan, co-founder of Hacked Off Films, gives The Tab his guide to the upcoming Future Shorts Festival.

After last year’s sell-out night, we’re returning to the Oxford Hub to do the Future Shorts Festival all over again. With a new set of incredible short films and a stellar line-up of music and comedy, this Thursday Hacked Off Films presents the Oxford leg of the world’s biggest pop-up film festival.

From a documentary narrated by Tom Waits – about an American conceptual artist – to a German drama about love and guilt that has won over 50 international awards; the range of films crosses the globe and a huge range of genres.

Curated by Future Cinema, the guys behind Secret Cinema, the festival takes place in 285 cities across 90 countries, and we’re extremely proud to be hosting it in Oxford.

A BAFTA Nominee, a winner of Sundance’s Short Filmmaking Award and a film from the makers of Catfish is just the start of the night; the Oxford Hub’s bar is open all evening and some of Oxford’s best comedians and musicians will be playing sets.

Expect some jazz, a bit of blues, poetry that will make you cry with joy and possibly even one of Hacked Off Films’ co-founders stepping up to the microphone. Nothing can go wrong. We hope.

Hacked Off Films aims to make watching film an event again. Moving away from the multiplex and into unusual spaces, often alongside drinking games or fancy dress, our events are designed so that you become more involved with the films you’re watching and the people you’re watching them with.

Every term we’ll host a range of events, culminating in the Future Shorts Festival and a huge immersive screening in the vein of Secret Cinema.

This term we’re taking over Exeter College Dining Hall on Friday of 7th week for a screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: an event that will include jelly beans, chocolate frogs and actors you can interact with before, after and possibly even during the film itself.

Before that extravaganza, however, we hope you’ll join us on Thursday for an evening of exceptional and thought-provoking films, comedy and music from around the world in a fantastic venue.
