I PSY WITH MY LITTLE EYE

Gangnam Style artist to speak at the Union on November 7

| UPDATED

Psy, the Korean artist who stormed the charts and some of our hearts with his number three hit Gangnam Style, will speak at the Union in two weeks.

The flamboyant 41-year-old will speak for an hour about his life and career on November 7, after Union president and fellow Korean John Lee invited him.

Gangnam has been viewed some 532,000,000 times on YouTube since being uploaded three months ago and received 500,000 hits on its first day alone.

Psy is the latest in a line of unlikely speakers that includes Peter Andre and Kerry Katona – who spoke on Wednesday about her battles with bipolar disorder.

Prior to his smash hit success, Psy experienced some controversy in South Korea where his second album, ‘Ssa 2’ was banned for sale to those under 19 in 2002. He has also been dubbed the “Bizarre Singer” due to his unashamedly weird choreography and his verging-on-the-explicit lyrical content.

At least he has a bow tie

Oxford reactions have been mixed.

Livvi Yallop, a 1st year English undergraduate, commented without more than a second’s hesitation after receiving the news that “this is possibly the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life.  Ever”

Sam Hodge, a 2nd year Philosophy and Theology student, was attracted by the irony of Psy’s work. He said: “Gangnam Style’ is actually really clever –it takes the piss out of stupid dance moves whilst becoming a stupid dance move itself”.

Nonetheless, some people seem to object to the author of such lines as “A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles” and “On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby” (Tab translation).

Tom Wiseman,  a 2nd year Theology student, mused “He’s a 40 year old man pretending to ride a horse. That in and of itself should be enough to discount him”.

And Wiseman is not alone. Andie Gbedemah, a 3rd year historian, agreed “I’m sick of hearing that song in clubs, and this is only going to encourage it”.

Whatever some may think of him, there’s sure to be a colossal crowd if YouTube’s biggest name touches down at Frewin Court.

As 2nd year English undergrad Michael Beale pointed out, “He’s a step up from Katie Price”.
