Varsity: Hockey whitewash puts UoN in control

Double hockey victory puts Notts 7-5 up after contrasting fortunes for rugby and lacrosse

| UPDATED

A remarkable 9-0 whitewash in Friday’s hockey extravaganza has left University of Nottingham tantalising close to retaining the Varsity bragging rights.

UoN need just one more win from the remaining events of women’s football, men’s football and men’s cricket to take home the Varsity crown for another year.

If we are victorious, much of the credit can go to the Hockey Club’s extraordinary achievements on Friday.

Carlsberg don’t do hockey victories…@NottsUniLHC

For the women’s teams in particular, the numbers speak for themselves: four games played, four wins, forty-one goals scored and zero conceded. Trent didn’t stand a chance!

Most importantly, in the matches that contributed towards the Varsity leaderboard – the games that really mattered – UoN came up with the goods.

With the women’s team strolling to a 7-0 win and the men coming through a nervier encounter 3-1, it will take a miracle for the Poly to catch UoN now.

NULHC President Abi Krone told The Tab that the results “capped off a great year for the Hockey Club.”

“It was an absolutely great game from the girls,” said Krone, before highlighting the similarly “great” performances of Alice Huston, Emily Smith, skipper Lucy Wood, as well as her own goal-scoring exploits.

How to celebrate a 9-0 win @NottsUniLHC

Hockey’s magnificent humiliation of Trent followed a mixed day of Varsity action the previous weekend for Notts.

The day started in impressive fashion for UoN, as the women’s rugby union team romped to a 34-17 win to put Uni of 5-4 ahead overall. Here’s what they had to say about the result:

Ah well.

UoN came unstuck just hours later against a talented and aggressive Trent lacrosse side, eventually losing 6-14, allowing Trent to level the Varsity Series 5-5.

Bit awkward now.

With just three events remaining, The Tab will be covering every step of the way, starting with football at Meadow Lane right at the very start of next term.
