Rugby League Varsity: “The underdog tag doesn’t bother us”

We spoke to Nottingham’s Jack Beaman ahead of Friday’s Varsity showdown. Check out the epic promo video below

Following University of Nottingham’s nail-biting 4-3 victory over Trent in the ice hockey last week, the Rugby League side are confident of making it 2-0 in the Varsity Series.

On the back of a successful season that has seen Notts all but guarantee the Midlands 1A league title with a game to spare, star man Jack Beaman was in confident mood when he talked to The Tab.

“We know a bit about the Trent team, as some of our players played with them in a joint team against Nottingham Outlaws RLFC last year. Our teams haven’t been in the same league this year though, so both teams could surprise each other.

“Trent are probably the favourites. They’re in a higher league than us this year, but it’s Varsity, so the underdogs tag doesn’t bother us.

“Both teams are in good form, so it will be a close game, but we’re confident in the players we have.”

Historically, there is nothing to separate the two sides. Since 2006, both universities have won four matches apiece, Trent edging last year’s fixture 8-14.

Notts will be trying to get a hold on Trent

Following the sell-out crowd at the Capital FM Arena for the ice hockey, Beaman was also keen to stress the importance of a large crowd.

“It’ll certainly be an experience playing in front of a big crowd, but personally I find that having a crowd cheer you on can only be a good thing.”
