Mental metal: 65 people in Norwich class ‘Heavy Metal’ as their religion

As if we could get any weirder

Nutty Norwich has been named the “Heavy Metal capital of the UK” after the recent census.

Perhaps surprisingly for a city famed for its culture and churches, the census states 0.05 per cent of Norwich’s population put “Heavy Metal” as their religion.

Just for context, that’s four times more than the highest concentration of Satanists in the country. Four.

The data also reveals that there are now 20 times more Jedi Knight in England than in the Star Wars universe – nearly as many as Buddhists in the UK.

And if Scientology’s your game, you might want to head to Mid-Sussex – that’s where the highest concentration of them call home.

Rebecca Mackenzie, President of UEA Deviant Society, was thrilled by the news: “Norwich’s metal scene is truly amazing – I’m not surprised so many people consider it a religion!

“It’s great to know Norwich is holding on to its alternative roots. I’m proud to be a Norwich rock/metal fan right now!”
