What do locals really think of us

It’s not the most glittering of reports…

We know how we can be. Especially after a drink or five, we like to think we know how to have a good time.

But when we venture away from campus and our treasured LCR and instead into the streets of Norwich, what impressions do we give off to the locals?

Lorna graduated from UEA this summer after studying English and Drama, and says her view on students there hasn’t changed all that much since she left.

“The only real difference would be that I’m more jealous of the students now! I loved it, and part of me wishes I was still there.”

It’s not just the ex-students who ‘know how we do’, either.

Kelly has lived in Norwich for 13 years and says her impression hasn’t changed too much throughout that time.

“There’s always something going on with the students. If there’s a party of any sort in the city, you’re guaranteed to find the students there!”

It’s nice to know our reputation for exquisite fancy dress doesn’t just stay tied to the LCR, isn’t it?

Joe, a barman at BRONX, was amazed at the antics our sports teams and societies get up to on their Wednesday socials.

“We had a huge crowd come in the other day all dressed as sheep. We’ve had cross-dressers, pirates, the works.”

“They always come in with the most random things too. Last week a group came in with about 30 beer mats between them and a spirits dispenser. God knows where they got it from.”

The horrors that can be sighted in a kebab shop on Prince of Wales Rd at any point from midnight onwards are enough to scar a sober individual for life.

“I cover a lot of night shifts. We have lots of students coming in and asking stupid questions. Like: ‘do you have ketchup?’ Or ‘do you do chips?’ We’re a kebab shop!

“We once had a guy come in and just starting peeing against the counter. We weren’t too sure how to deal with that… The list goes on!”

But there’s no one in this city who knows us students quite as well as our faithful cab drivers.

At the end of the day, you can always count on them to bring you back to campus after a night in town, keeping a straight-verging-on-moody face as one of your friends is about to wee themselves and someone else is using every single muscle in their body to stop themselves from throwing up everywhere.

“People being sick, getting naked, students hitting on our drivers, we’ve had it all. UEA students work hard, and it’s clear that they sure like to let their hair down too.”

“Yeah, sometimes they do make a bit of trouble and play up, but it’s to be expected when picking up groups of young lads and ladies at 3AM. But other times the students can be really lovely, they can really make your night a lot better.”

“I don’t know a single driver who’s a bit gutted when he’s given a job of taking students back to the uni. They’re always up for a laugh, and we appreciate that.”

Aww, we love you too!
