UEA Fight Night – The Results!

Sport Editor Georgina Doe went down to Fight Night – here are the results!

| UPDATED

After an amazing night, here are the results from UEA Fight Night.

It was a great night full of high-class boxing from all the competitors. There was blood, heavy-hitting, characters, fast feet, and amazing combinations.

Here are the results from UEA’s Fight Night:

Sam Attwood vs Tanaka Patrick Taks

Sam Attwood started brightly in this fight, but Tanaka Patrick Taks soon took control. Landing numerous jabs and upper-cuts on his opponent Attwood was soon sporting a bloody nose, and the referee rightly called it off giving Taks the win by TKO. It was a great first fight, and it meant the evening certainly started as it meant to go on!

Guy Chatfield vs Pavel Mizgulin

This fight started slowly, but exploded toward the latter end of the second round and into the third, with Pavel Mizgulin taking control. Chatfield was more than a match for the Russian, but Pavel landed more of the punishing blows and as Chatfield was beginning to tire Mizgulin was just coming into it. Mizgulin was given the victory after a unanimous decision from the judges.

Harry Pollard vs Josh Excell

This bout exploded from start to finish. Pollard had the crowd on his side from the beginning, winning the neutrals over with his all-pink outfit and antics on entering the ring. He also looked to be the more offensive boxer of the two, but Excell more than played his part. An excellent fight from two big-hitters the support of the crowd probably helped Pollard to shade it in all three rounds, even after he began to tire. Pollard was announced the victor by unanimous decision. A shout-out must go to Harry’s mum, her support for her son and all the other fighters was fantastic!

Ella Gilbert vs Abi Smith

Gilbert dominated thish highly-anticipated fight from start to finish. Smith, however, showed that she was not just there to make up the numbers by standing toe-to-toe with Gilbert and landing a few sharp jabs. Gilbert was just too strong, and dazzled this reporter with her amazing footwork on her way to a decisive victory by unanimous decision.

Max Heron vs Billy Kensit

Max Heron and Billy Kensit really put on a great show for the crowd in one of the most entertaining fights of the night and showed some absolutely phenomenal boxing credentials. The fight exploded from the off and was one of the quickest of the night, both fighters coming forward for the kill. Nothing separated the two and the fight was named a draw after the judges judged the first round a draw, the second Heron’s and the third Kensit’s. It was a fair result, and the fighters can be proud of their performance. I would have loved to see this one go up to five rounds, or even a full 12!

Interval

The ACS performed during the interval. Their performance was just as energetic as some of the boxing, and I was very jealous of their moves! Some of those splits looked painful – well done girls!

Naf Haque vs Ben Phillips

Following the interval these two picked up the crowd with a fantastic brawl! Both fighters looked very much up for it, but despite landing some hard hits on his opponent Phillips always looked second best to Haque. Naf was just too quick and strong, and landed some punishing blows on his opponent. Phillips was not helped by often finding himself in bad positions in the ring, up against the ropes and unable to take the upper hand. Haque was announced the victor in a fight of two real warriors.

Jordan Morris vs Antonio Invernizzi

This was my favourite fight of the night and the two boxers were phenomenal. In truth I was expecting Invernizzi to win easily as he has years of experience in kickboxing, and although he wouldn’t be able to use his feet I thought his fitness would win him the fight.

As it was, Jordan Morris could easily have been announced the winner at the end. With the support of the crowd and his family on the sidelines, Morris exploded in the first round. Both fighters landed quick combination punches on their opponents more than once throughout the fight.

Morris begun to tire in the third after expending so much energy in the first and second, and after some brutal combinations Invernizzi was eventually announced the winner. A serious congratulations to both fighters – it was an amazing battle between two evenly-matched boxers. I’m heading to the rematch of Froch vs Groves in May and it wouldn’t surprise me if I still found this bout just as entertaining as some of the fights on that undercard.

Conrad Francis vs George Redhead

In what was supposed to be a tense match-up, this fight never really got going and after the speed and ferocity of previous encounters there was a lull in the crowd to match the pace and tempo of the boxers in the ring. Redhead was announced the deserving winner as he was the boxer coming forward and at least attempting to fight. Some good defense was shown by both, but it wasn’t the fight we had been expecting to see. Perhaps the occasion got to Francis and Redhead in the ring.

Shomarri R. Diaz vs Khurram Khan

The big fight of the night between the incoming president and the outgoing president did not disappoint. Khan dominated from the outset, and despite some vociferous support in the crowd Diaz never got a strangle-hold in the fight.

Khan was just too quick with some superb combinations ripping his opponent to shreds. What would have been interesting is if this fight had gone into further rounds. It looks as though Diaz may be the type of fighter who needs a couple of warm-up rounds to really get going and he was just coming into it in the third round. If this fight had gone on longer I know it would have been closer. As it was, Khan was announced the winner in a unanimous decision.

It was a superb entertaining night, and I’m sure the crowd enjoyed it. UEA Boxing did a great job and put on a great show – I can’t wait until next year’s! A shout-out to the referee who was fair and sound throughout, the judges who called all fights correctly in my opinion, and the man in the middle who did a great job orchestrating the night, even with some technical difficulties!
