UEA RFC Continue to Dominate

Men’s Rugby had a fantastic day on Wednesday, with neither of UEA’s sides conceding a single point.

The 1st XV continued their good form with a 0-57 away win at Coventry University.  After a slightly shaky start, in which Coventry made good use of the ball, a dominant display emerged.

UEA kept it tight in the scrum, allowing the backs secure and consistent ball that they exploited consistently through the game. This was best highlighted by Charlie’s Nicholson’s try; Jack Walsh peeling off from the back of a scrum but being tackled short of the line. The ball was recycled, and the backs exploited the space by quickly getting the ball out wide to Nicholson, who was left with an easy run-in.

Marco Merlina was outstanding with the boot, landing 22 points with a conversion rate of 84%. The stand out moment match was undoubtedly Jack ‘Chris Ashton’ Walsh’s 60-yard solo effort.

This result was accompanied by solid performance from the 2nd XV, who kicked off their BUCS campaign in a hard fought match, recording a 37-0 win against the University of Lincoln. For what was essentially a new team, this result really illustrates the character and quality that is in the side. Tackling and the work at the break down was a consistently high standard throughout, especially considering the terrible conditions.

Kolade Owobowale scored two tries, and Matt ‘Bob’ Joseph, Jordan McBain, Ben Mason, and Faz Burke (captain) also got on the score sheet. Special mention has to go to Chris Bennett, who came on at fly half and really influenced the game.

Man of the Match – Freddie Thorneycroft. Excellent tackling and work at the break down.
