Five Things To Do Now Spring Has Finally Hit UEA

(Warning: this article includes the word ‘fusty’)

Spring uea lifestyle uea students uea summer uea tips

The sun is shining, half of campus have taken to walking around in bikinis and shorts, and procrastination is ripe for the taking. What are you waiting for?

1)      Sit on the Square.

Sit on the square? Sit by the lake, sit on a bench, sit on a nice patch of grass. If there was an award for best University to just sit around at, UEA would most probably win. Look at the square, it’s a structure of seats for goodness sake. Once the sun makes an appearance you’re sure to rediscover the joy of hardly doing anything but lounging on campus all day anyway.

We’ve all felt the burning eyes of a thousand students as we walk through the Square. Alone…

2)      One of the five Ls

It is widely acknowledged that in England a temperature above 10 degrees is shorts and tshirts weather. After this disgustingly long winter it’s only naturally that a peep of sunshine should have students swiftly shedding clothes. Less clothes and hot weather are scientifically proven (maybe) to make everyone appear more attractive to each other, and feel a little more amorous, so why not seize the opportunity and cross one of the L’s (lake, lecture theatre, launderette, LCR and library for the uninitiated) off your list! There’s no saying how long warm weather will last this year, so make the most of it and enjoy the romantic scenery of campus.

Very romantic…just watch out for rabbit poo

3)      Spend more time and effort on considering your library spot

The above two points are fairly fantastical, in reality it’s exam time so regardless of the weather, a good percentage of responsible students are going to be in the library working hard. The best tip for surviving the library in spring time is to maybe get up a little bit early to avoid the crowds, or prolong your awkward walk around the library looking for a suitable study spot. Maybe the sight of your fancy free friends playing around with hula hoops and barbecues by the lake will inspire you to work harder, but if not, maybe pick a seat away from the windows.  Also seek good ventilation, the combination of stressed students and mild temperatures can combine to create a somewhat fusty environment.

A carrel… the Holy Grail of library spots

4)      Stay out of the overdraft

This may be overestimating the healing powers of some warm weather, but it is genuinely easier to save money in  spring time than it is in  winter. Heating bills will be down, as well as electricity thanks to the longer days. Not only this, but spring and summer are prime times for rediscovering the joy of not really doing anything all day. Sitting inside all day in the middle of December, with four dressing gowns on, venturing outside only to purchase expensive food to cheer yourself up does not compare to spring days full of baby rabbits and lounging around in the sun with some friends because it is too hot to do anything productive.

This little bunny does not endorse giving up revision to chase him

5)      Finally embrace that healthy lifestyle you’ve been meaning to all year

Optimistic when daytime drinking finally becomes acceptable again, but with campus looking so pretty in the sunshine, it’s pretty hard to resist going for a walk around the lake. Spring weather also makes riding your bike to campus a happy experience rather than the epic quest that it can sometimes feel like during winter months. Hibernating and eating for warmth is no longer necessary for survival, or really appealing, so make the most of spring and go hula hoop in the sun.

Editor’s Note: sod that, do these count instead?
