UEA honours deceased student

UEA’s flag will be lowered today in memory of LDC student Averil Hart

The University’s flag, which stands atop the Registry Building, will be lowered today to honour the memory of student Averil Hart.

First year LDC student Averil died in hospital on December 15 after becoming ill only a few days before.

Averil’s funeral takes place today at Colchester Cemetery, to which Averil’s parents extended the invitation to any UEA student who wished to attend.

Speaking about Averil, Head of LDC Professor Peter Womack told the university, “In her first semester Averil had already begun to make an impact in the school: she is mourned as a quick-witted, ambitious and intellectually generous member of the groups she took part in.

“She had a great potential future both as a literature student and as a creative writer. It is tragic that she was allowed so little time; it is clear that she made the very most of what she had.”
