Four Arrests made at EDL march

Tensions run high as EDL and foes clash in Norwich

Four arrests were made as around 200 EDL supporters marched through Norwich on Saturday.

Anti-EDL group We Are Norwich took to the streets to oppose the nature of the rally, causing a number of incidents to take place around the city throughout the afternoon.

EDL members arrived at Castle Meadow at 1pm with a large police escort and were met with anti-EDL chants from the 1,500 strong We Are Norwich group, which was set up by numerous smaller local groups in opposition to the rally.

Tensions ran high after one man climbed onto a grass bank above the EDL supporters and begun shouting at them, whilst using a guitar case to shield himself from the cigarette lighters being thrown at him.

An EDL supporter eventually joined him on the grass bank and eventually a fight broke out, leading to one man suffering minor injuries, and the other being arrested on suspicion of assault.

The march was consequently delayed until 1.30pm whilst police restored order.

A slow march through the city, along Opie Street, Bedford Street, Exchange Street and up Gaol Hill, saw the EDL march arrive in front of City Hall just before 2pm.

Two further arrests were made after speeches were made by the EDL supporters outside City Hall.

At 2.35pm, the EDL supporters were led back towards Prince of Wales road, where they were allowed to disperse in the direction of the train station.

However, there was one last clash between the two sets of supporters outside Natwest bank on Prince of Wales Road, and police were required to break up the ugly scene.
