Battle of the Bars: Mercy XS

The ultimate guide to clubs in Norwich. Today we review Mercy!

A stagger down Prince of Wales Street always brings that vital question: where are we going tonight? In this week-long look at Norwich’s night life, The Tab brings you the ultimate guide to clubbing in the City. Let the battle of the bars commence!

Mercy XS

It’s back. The club eagerly awaited by third years. The place that’s got the young’ens whispering, “What is Mercy?”

After its 13 month closure, Mercy has re-opened, all shiny and new as Mercy XS.

Third years may remember Mercy for its unique scent of vomit. But heaven behold, it appears new XS has purchased some Febreeze! They’ve cleaned up their act in the toilets too, I could have stayed in the ladies all night!

Doesn’t smell too bad these days

Banished is the Grease Medley of old Mercy, Lulu’s Shout is well and truly off the cards. Wedding classics have been replaced by a playlist of popular top 40 hits.

The building hasn’t changed much. A dance floor still awaits tiddly clubbers whilst a balcony upstairs provides another bar and seating booths. There are two new lounges, the XS Lounge and The Platinum Lounge. According to the website, entrance to lounges is “only available via a selection process”, so perhaps not a place for us mere students. Unless you know someone who works there. Or are very attractive.

That breed of lady known as the “Mercy Girl” was nowhere to be seen. Where was all the grinding, that girl lying on the toilet floor? Still, it’s only week three, there’s time yet.

The packed dance floor and huge queue outside did dampen my Mercy spirit.

I’d recommend Mercy if you don’t take yourself too seriously. Embrace your inner chav. Dance on a podium. Have no regrets tomorrow.
