Rachel Abendroth reviews Episode 3 of ‘One Tree Hill’.

One Tree Hill is a drama that first aired in 2003 set in the fictional small town of Tree Hill in North Carolina. The show follows the lives of two half-brothers who compete to become the stars of the high school basketball team.

Like all shows revolving around the lives of teenagers it has, over the years, dealt with issues of love triangles, murder, drug and steroid abuse, sex, pregnancies and marriage. Now in its ninth and final season, One Tree Hill has been a part of thousands of adolescents lives as they progress through their teenage years and into their twenties.

As leading characters have come and gone, the three remaining original cast members Hayley James Scott (Bethany Joy Galetti), husband Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) and Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush) remain as the central characters. Hayley and Nathan are juggling their ever hectic lives with a new baby daughter joining older brother Jamie, Hayley has to learn to cope by herself as Nathan is travelling recruiting up and coming sport stars for the agency he co-owns with Clay (Hayley's sister, Quinn's boyfriend). Brooke finally has the life she has dreamt of as her marriage to director Julian grows in strength and she is finally blessed by the birth of twin sons at the end of last season.

In this episode, Brooke tries desperately to connect with her father on the golf course whilst Julian works hard to find production companies wishing to hire his filming space. Meanwhile, Haley struggles to cope with running Karen's Café and an unusual knight in shining armour steps in to help out. Chase drowns his sorrows and tries to mend his broken heart after Alex's shock departure and Quinn spies on Clay and comes to breaking point when she discovers her boyfriend’s deception. Millie finally blows and confronts Mouth about his over-eating problem.

Thankfully, what had begun to become a rather depressing soap opera is spiced up with the re-emergence of loveable rogue Chris Keller who offers some laugh out loud moments. As Chuck adopts Keller's arrogance, style and third person referencing, you cannot help but giggle at this loveable young lad who looks so much older than all his fellow class mates. Either the casting is slightly wrong or it is a deliberate mistake by the casting directors to add to Chuck’s characters sense of not fitting in with his peers and always befriending the older members of Tree Hill.

As the final series of the long running drama set in the quiet town of Tree Hill, North Carolina faces its final curtain call. The drama increases as we witness all our favourite regulars facing dramatic changes in their already hectic lives. Dealing with issues of reality from managing a career and child care, financial troubles, family dilemmas and relationships hitting the rocks, One Tree Hill has been a fixture in people’s lives for the past 9 years now. Never presuming that you know as a viewer what is coming next, this episode definitely doesn't disappoint as the closing minutes end in a cliff-hanger, leaving one of our favourite characters in a questionable state.
