Fancy Dress Uni-Style

Why do girls insist on making their bodies a spectacle at every opportunity?

In today’s modern twenty first century world, it seems that the term ‘Fancy Dress’ has become synonymous with going out looking like a bit of a whore. This complete lack of self-respect used to crop up only once a year on the 31st of October.

Halloween meant you could, in the immortal words of Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls, “dress like a total slut and no-one could say anything about it.” And so it was, girls donned animal ears, drew on whiskers and went out wearing what can only be described as lingerie.

But not anymore! Enter the LCR ‘theme nights’. Now every week, girls have the opportunity to wear their bandeau bras and tightest bodycon skirts that, (as my father would eloquently describe) resemble little more than a belt.

Don’t get me wrong, it is totally your choice to dress like a street walker. After all If you regularly wear just enough clothing to avoid a public indecency charge then, by all means, continue in your ways, but don’t expect me to not tut when you arrive in your ‘costume’.

But to be honest, even though I find the girls that do dress like this somewhat annoying, the people who irritate me the most are the ones that say dressing in this way is empowering for women.

They argue that because women can proudly show of their bodies, it demonstrates courage and women taking back ownership of their bodies. Now I’m all for women reinventing their image (give me a bit of Naomi Wolf any day) but this idea is simply ridiculous. Even suggesting that these girls are dressing to show how women are now on an equal level to men is complete bollocks. I would put good money on a bet that these girls could not even name one feminist writer (excluding Rihanna, who apparently is the new voice of feminism).

This repugnant view of feminism is just infuriating, and personally I would rather eat off the LCR's sticky floor than dress like I sell sex for a living.

Girls that wear little clothes appear to do it for one reason and one reason only, for attention. It just seems that the constant reappearance of girls dressed in these ‘sexy’ outfits are completely putting themselves on show for guys, it’s like a butchers shop where the men fight over the best piece of meat. These girls do not own their bodies; they are exposing themselves for the amusement of males.

I'm sure the upcoming ‘Masquerade’ LCR will bring some more hidden whores out of the closet but until I see guys walking round in their boxers, I'll be steering clear of the stilettoes and fishnets.
