Northumbria Police’s Neighbourhood Inspector for the area, Neil Brotherton, said: “Enquiries are being carried out into the incident and we would ask any witnesses to come forward.

“In particular we’re keen to speak to two men who spoke to the woman after the incident as they could be key witnesses.

“I would like to stress these two men are being treated as witnesses, they may have seen the offender and be able us to identify him.

“Officers carry out regular patrols in the area to offer reassurance to residents and I would urge anyone concerned to speak to an officer.”
