What is the best cash machine on campus?

£5 notes are the holy grail

noad

We use them far more than we should do, and are often met with the struggles of having to get out £40 when you wanted £30, and £20 when you wanted £10. Nightmare.

We ranked the best cash points for convenience, location and if they dish out fivers. Which is your favourite?

Outside the Union

A big fan of £20 notes, this one

The favourite for the majority of students, this one comes top for location. But there’s usually a massive queue for it and one of them is nearly always out of order.

Although free to use, there is no £5 option and £10 notes are a rarity. This means you’re always left with a dreaded £20 when all you wanted was money to get some £2.75 sweet potato chips in Habita.

Inside Habita

The only one that charges

A very poor choice indeed. It charges you £1.75 for starters, so the question is, why would anyone use it when there is a free one just a couple of minutes away?

The only reason I can think of is people in their drunken/lazy state who want another pint and can’t be bothered to walk. No fivers either. Poor.

Law and Business School

Due to the popularity of Business and Law courses at Northumbria, there was a massive queue for this machine and I went on a Saturday. Like Ellison’s cash point, it’s usefully located for those at City Campus East but there were no £5 options. It is free to use though.

Near Ellison Building, Northumberland Road

This one is fab

I never even knew this existed until a few days ago, surprising really when it’s a massive box just plonked onto the street. This is a strong cash point.

Free withdrawals, good location and it offers £5 too. And everyone loves having a £5 in their purses for snack related urgencies.

Inside the Ellison Building

You can top up your phone too, how 2008

Another one I didn’t realise existed, but this is tucked away to be fair. Located through double doors in the Ellison Building entrance near Nixon Hall, this machine is a useful little spot if you have your lectures and seminars there.

Free to use, no £5 notes, but £10 and £20 notes were available. You can top up your phone, but anybody who doesn’t have a contract is either an international or just plain weird.

Sainsbury’s

The brightest machine on offer

Although technically not a Northumbria cash machine, the Sainsbury’s one is useful if you live on New Bridge Street or Liberty Quay. Again, free to use with no £5 option, but £10 and £20 were available. The queue is usually mental.

Verdict

We’re backing the one on Northumberland Road near Ellison Building for sheer convenience and location, and it’s not like you can miss it either.
