There’s a Professor Binns at Northumbria

And we had a Dr. Cullen, too

To die hard Harry Potter fans, Professor Binns is a well loved ghost haunting the halls of Hogwarts.

He’s arguably a lesser known character due to the fact he’d already popped his clogs before HP was even in first year, but exciting nonetheless.

Just to refresh all muggle memories, the ghostly Dr Binns taught Harry and the gang “A History of Magic”.

And now we have our very own Binns too.

Dr Richard Binns is a principal lecturer in Physics and Electrical Engineering, and looks like this (nothing like his ghoulish other):

Richard Binns did a stretch of study at Huddersfield University, studying Electronic and Information Engineering, going on to tackle a PhD in Analogue Test Strategies.

He did not expose the existence of the Chamber of Secrets to his second years because he’s far more trustworthy than a guy who still thinks it’s okay to hold lectures, even though he’s past tense.

For a slightly sexier link to the dark side, there was a brief period where a Dr. Cullen (aka Twilight) was researching lots of nice things about Irish folk music at our humble poly abode.

Does he look like Robert Patterson? Not really. Did Edward Cullen ever express a direct interest in U2? Doubtful.

Dr. Matteo Cullen

Dr. Cullen gained his PHD down to pure interest and dedication to Irish rock.

He’s also played his hand at lecturing English Literature and can brag a following as a musician in his own right.

He can speak Japanese, and is an Open Water Diver – clearly quite a character without his vampire alter ego.

The actual Edward Cullen can’t play a guitar and can’t even go out during the day without sparkling up a storm. Imagine THAT mid lecture.

This is exactly what he would look like in Twilight

So there we have it. Other universities can brag interesting links to main characters of magical fiction, but did they have a U2 worshiping deep sea diver and an electrical engineering ghost? We think not.
