Seven sober things to do in Newcastle

Whether you’re not a big drinker, or you’re just in the mood for a day off from drinking (maybe the hangover is a bit much to go for lunchtime cocktails – oops), sometimes there’s nothing more wholesome than a day out with your mates which doesn’t involve alcohol.

We completely understand that not everything you do as a uni student needs to revolve around drinking (although most things do), so we’ve put together a list of of the seven best things that you can do sober.

The Pottery Experience

We can guarantee that when you were a child, someone had a pottery party for their birthday, and it’s just as much fun to do in your twenties as it was then.

You can choose to either paint pottery or even make your own, and prices range from £10-40, depending on what piece you decide to do. Plus, students get 10 per cent off Monday – Friday, so what more could you ask for?

Baltic 

The Baltic is an absolute Newcastle staple, and you’ve probably been there more times than you can count. However, the exhibits frequently change, you’ll never get bored.

Plus, when the outdoor viewing platform is open, it’s an absolute dream view of the Toon, and it’ll defo remind you why we love it so much.

Cat cafe/dog cafe

Nothing beats a coffee at the dog or cat cafe when it comes to being wholesome. With the choice of Catpawcino and Mog on the Tyne for the cat cafe, and Dog and Scone for the dog cafe, you’re spoilt for choice!

It’s hard to imagine a cuter experience than having a coffee with a dog cuddled up on your lap. We’re booking to go again right now.

The Glamourous Owl

We can safely say that The Glamourous Owl needs more hype. Head over to make yourself a gorgeous silver ring from £39, or just browse their shop; either way, you’ll fall in love with everything and need to buy it all.

It’s a great day out, and you’ll get a gift to remember the day by too which you can keep forever, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Surfing 

You can’t leave Newcastle without going to Tynemouth and trying out surfing at least once.

You can book lessons if you’ve never been before, which are two hours long and include the wetsuit and board, so there’s no excuse not to try it out. It’s so easy to access on the metro too, just hop on and head to the beach.

Charity Shopping

A day out charity shopping, vintage shopping or hitting the kilo sales is always a great shout. The Gate hosts regular kilo sales, which are always a big hit with students, so you defo need to get there early to get first pick of everything, but don’t worry if you’re not an early bird – they have so many clothes you’re bound to find something you’ll love.

If you fancy a shopping trip on a day that there isn’t a kilo sale, don’t worry, Newcastle boasts a huge amount of charity shops and vintage shops, dotted all over the place, so you can defo make a whole day of it.

Ouseburn Farm

Ouseburn isn’t just good for pubs. Although they have such a good range of places for a pint or dinner, their farm is always a good place to visit too. Grab a coffee and have a wander round the animals, it’s the perfect place for a catch up chat
